How “scan-friendly” is your web copy?

Do you read through every webpage you visit or every blog post you come across? If I was to bet my money on it, answer would be probably not. If fact, you most likely scan through webpages and blog posts. Matter of fact, you might just be thinking of scanning through this post (you got caught red-handed, didn’t you?).

If you own a webpage, let me ask you this – Is your web copy “scan-friendly”? Most people who cannot scan through something real fast these days, skip reading the page altogether. What does this mean to you? It means your website or blog post is not a very popular place to be online. But there’s good news. You can make it “scan-friendly”.

Here’s how to make your webpage or blog post scan friendly:

  • Create a attractive headline for your webcopy. It will create a interest in your reader and he/she will actually want to read or scan through what’s written below the headline. Most of the times, if the headline does not interest a user, they automatically consider the content of the body useless. I am guilty of it sometimes and I can be pretty sure that you are too.
  • Divide your post into sections and provide a header for each section. This way, the user can briefly skim through the headers and determine whether anything is of interest to them.
  • Use fonts that are easy to read. I recommend using arial or verdana. They are easy on eyes, and makes reading enjoyable.
  • If possible, keep your web copy short. Many times people write at lengths which can be written in a sentence or a paragraph. When you keep your web copy short, the reader enjoys reading it. In other words, make sure every word serves a purpose.

Hope this helps. If you believe this has helped you in any way, leave a comment and let me know about your experience.
